Since 2011, the import side of PM Spirits has been bringing in what we think are some of the greatest spirits on the planet, distilled by people who care about what they do and refuse to cut corners. We were early to the single barrel picking game, though it wasn't worded that way because barrel picking simply wasn't a "thing" yet. We'd bottle them under our own label – back then it was Paul-Marie & Fils – or bringing them in under the distiller's own label. We started with single cask Cognac (like this one for K&L Wines back in 2011) before branching out to single cask Armagnac, Calvados, and more.
Single casks are cool for a lot of reasons – each is unique and the yield is small, lending a sense of exclusivity for those who get their hands on a bottle. There's a definite "shiny new thing" factor, call it FOMO if you want. When single casks are good, they can be some of the dopest things to drink.
As an importer, selling a single cask typically goes like this: it gets bottled, we bring the 250 or so bottle yield into the US, and we sell almost all of it within a couple months of it arriving. There are some great reviews, some hype on social media, it's the best thing since sliced bread. But collectively, the market has a pretty short attention span and after a few weeks there are already a dozen other cool things that have been released. Fans of what we do tend to be the early adopters, the evangelists, the nerds (we mean that as a compliment), the person constantly yearning for something new and exciting. It's not just fans of PM, it's us too – that's a big part of the reason we even do what we do. So occasionally, the last dozen bottles of a given release get forgotten about, stashed away somewhere in the warehouse as both we and the market have moved onto the next shiny new thing.
At some point we do a physical inventory and realize that those last dozen bottles of a release are actually still there. It's a warehouse not a jungle and we know they weren't actually "lost", but sometimes an item can appear on a report so many times that our brains start to block it out. Poor inventory management? Maybe. But the silver lining is that this page is all about those forgotten bottles.
No, we do not aim at competing directly with retailers. We ain't stupid. Shops that carry PM products are the lifeblood of our business – without them, we'd be nowhere. This page is just for odds and ends that fall through the cracks and resurface, often years later.
